Find the Humor

I like to find humor in my thought process.

When a negative thought shows up, I make it my challenge to notice it. Once I identify the thought I’m giving myself, I can usually override it before it takes over.

After my divorce, I bought my very first home on my own. The first thing my neighbors told me was, “Watch out for the rats.”

Well… I have a serious fear of rats and mice. I do not like rodents.

Immediately, my brain went to work. I imagined them running all over the outside of my house while I slept. Every little shadow became suspicious. I checked the exterior constantly, making sure there were no little invaders. I had the complete heebie-jeebies.

One evening, as I was shutting down the house before bed, I heard a noise.

“That’s it,” I thought. “The rats are here.”

My heart started racing as I cautiously investigated, preparing myself for whatever horror I was about to find.

Instead…

It was the ice maker dropping ice.

I stood there laughing at myself.

The refrigerator came with the house, and because the previous owner had left a bag of ice in the freezer, I assumed the ice maker didn’t work. I had lived there for months without hearing it make a single batch of ice.

My brain had turned an ice cube into a rodent invasion.

That moment reminded me of something important: our thoughts are incredibly convincing, but they aren’t always true.

I decided I wasn’t going to let fear run my life. I took practical steps to prevent rodents, and I reminded myself that if I ever did have one, I would handle it—just like I’ve handled everything else life has brought my way.

That’s how our minds work.

A single thought can create an entire story that feels real, even when nothing is actually happening.

When we learn to notice those stories—and sometimes even laugh at them—we take back our power. We stop believing every fearful thought our brain offers and start trusting ourselves instead.

When I’m coaching clients, one of my favorite moments is helping them realize that what they’ve believed to be an undeniable fact is often just a thought. And thoughts can always be questioned.

Sometimes healing begins with a simple smile… and an ice maker.
